Welcome to another Christ over everything series. Mental health is one of the major crisis of modern times. Mental health affects us and It can be exhausting physically too. Everyone from rich, poor, young and old have been affected by it. Especially in a time like this where many people are idle and thinking about the potential challenges of the future, I believe it's possible (But may God forbid) that many people will fall into depression even more. But we have hope in Christ our saviour who has won all the battles of our lives. There is nothing too hard for Jesus.
There is purpose in God.
A few weeks ago I had an opportunity to meet a person who had been battling with depression. She said that she was old and lived a quality life and got wonderful children and grandkids. She also told me that, she doesn't find joy in this stage of her life. In my conversation with this dear aunty, I heard her constantly say how she didn't find purpose in her life anymore. The moment she said that I was able to identify the root cause of the problem. The reason she is having sleepless nights and lack joy in her daily activities is closely connected with the fact of not discovering her purpose. I went on to tell her that, just because she is old doesn't mean she doesn't have a purpose to live. I'm still continuing to pray and encourage her that fact.
I believe there is a purpose in everyone's life. It's the purpose that gives value to our life. Our life is not necessarily about living the best life materially and having a good career. It's more than that. As Pastor Rick Warren says, "we are made with a purpose and for a purpose."
Colossians 1:16
For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.
The first step to corner the power of depression is to tell yourself this, "If God has made me, "I believe God has a purpose for me and through me. In Him, I will find the fulfilment of my life" I believe that God has created us that we may know His heart and be worshipers of Him through every area of our lives.
Joy in salvation.
2 Corinthians 12:9
And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.
God's grace is sufficient for you. I believe that there is no power in this world that is too big before the power of the blood of Jesus. When you believe that Jesus' death has paid the price for everything including the battels in your mind, I believe that you have given access to something more than the power of medicine or a doctor. The power that we get through the finished work of Jesus on the cross is also quicker, powerful and effective.
1 John 4:18
There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.
Causes of depression and mental health problems have also to do with the fact that people don't feel loved enough. It can also be to do with loneliness and having no meaningful friends to speak the right words into a struggling person. However, When we are covered in God's love, fear will have no place in our lives. His love can cover all our insecurities and fears.
Practical ways to Deal with Depression
Psalms 139:29
Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts;
Understand the cause and why you feel what you feel. Depression can come in shapes and sizes. David can be found spending time with God examining his heart. You can do this with someone you trust or maybe a professional counsellor who can help you. Key is to expose your innermost issues.
Deuteronomy 31:8
The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”
Psalm 119:103
“How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!”
Renew your mind based on the truth. The verses we just read above are true. One, God says, he will never leave you nor forsake you. two, His word is like medicine to your soul. Find ways to feed your soul with the right food and you won't believe how it will transform your soul
Psalms 133:7
Behold, how good and how pleasant it is For brothers to dwell together in unity!

At all cost have quality spiritual discipline. Read the Bible, journal your thoughts, pray, call your friends who speak life over you. Be grateful to God at all time. :)
In conclusion, I want to remind you of this verse below. No matter what situation you are in. God wants to get you out of it and give you life that's full of joy and purpose. If you are in a challenge to do with mental health, I want you to know that we are available for you. God loves you.
Psalm 40:1
I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the LORD and put their trust in him.
