Christ over poverty : Part: 03

Writer's picture: Augustine J AlbertAugustine J Albert

God is in control of this season. If your trust is in the right place, this season is going to be different for you from what the rest of the world is experiencing or going to experience. Here is another blog for you to understand the power of Christ over poverty

There is poverty everywhere.

Let me explain what poverty is in a simple way since my heart is to not limit poverty to lack in the area of wealth alone, "poverty is leaving on what is leftover or nothing. Poverty is a mindset that is very hard to break out from even when you aren't technically poor anymore. Poverty is a constant state of insecurity. Poverty is not only to do with social, economic or political. Poverty can also be a spiritual or a mental state too. There is poverty in all areas. "

In a world where poverty is still prevalent, I believe we need not only people who walk in abundance, we also need people who can teach people how to eliminate poverty from our lives, homes and Nations. Because it is biblical and it is the heart of God to do so.

Proverbs 31:8-9 (NIV)
“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.”

Poverty at your doorstep.

Two-thirds of people in India live in poverty. 68.8% of the Indian population lives on less than $2 a day. Those of you who are updated about the present crisis may have noticed how the daily wage workers of India are under such immense pressure that many are homeless and in streets. The other days I saw this disturbing video of children eating frogs in a rural part of India because there is no food or source of income.

We have what it takes.

I believe it's important for us to understand that we have what it takes for us to live a life in fullness. I understand that many in the Christian community have different understandings about prosperity. How much is too much is a question that many are still debating? But anyone who believes in true prosperity in Christ will work on eliminating poverty. we have seen that with the life of early missionaries of 18 and 19th cent who went to India and Africa to serve the poor. these people left their rich lifestyle in Europ and came to 3rd world countries to serve people because they believed in what we call as the prosperity gospel. a gospel that brought Jesus first into the hearts of people. Even the poorest of the poor have the resources to one day be a person who has an abundance in all areas of his life. Because God has not intended poverty for our lives. If we understand some key principles from the word of God and start walking in those I believe that we can eliminate the stronghold of poverty from our lives.

In Christ, we not only have the power to be content with what we have, but we also have the power to overcome poverty and prosper.

Job 5:15-16 (NIV)
“He saves the needy from the sword in their mouth; he saves them from the clutches of the powerful. So the poor have hope, and injustice shuts its mouth.”

You just read Job 5: 15 which talks about the nature of God. God is working so that the poor may have hope. Enemy wants people to die of having not even a single meal. But God wants to shut the mouth of injustice. If we have the heart of God we will follow the foot steps of our master and fights to bring hope to the poor.

2 Corinthians 8:9 (NIV)
“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.”

As I conclude the part one of this topic on poverty let me tell you that Poverty is not from God. Because God sent it His only son that people can be set free from poverty of all kind.

Step towards eliminating poverty

In order to eliminate poverty from our lives, it takes our mind to do its job first. For a long time, I thought that there was nothing wrong with living in a place of nothingness. I thought it was the way of life so endure it. Also, it didn't bother me when I saw people living in a poor state of life. God began to change my mentality of poverty when I saw the generosity of the people I admired in the Lord. I saw how they gave cheerfully and abundantly without expecting nothing in return. I was surprised by such faith. It was then Holy Spirit began to teach me that, many of these people who are blessed and prosperous don't fear lack.

Because they believe that wealth belongs to God and comes from God. Their trust is never in the paycheque or how much they have left in the bank. In fact, the way of eliminating the spirit of poverty is by renewing our mind with the word of God and putting our trust in Him.

Genesis 14:21-24
Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.
The king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the people and keep the goods for yourself.”
But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “With raised hand I have sworn an oath to the Lord, God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth,  that I will accept nothing belonging to you, not even a thread or the strap of a sandal, so that you will never be able to say, ‘I made Abram rich.’  I will accept nothing but what my men have eaten and the share that belongs to the men who went with me

Abrahams faith and action imparts great wisdom here. Abraham denies a great amount of wealth from the king of Sodom just to prove that his trust is in God and not in people.

On another account, we also see how Abraham blesses the King of Sodom by giving a tenth of all his belongings.

  • When we give we show that we have no fear of lack.

  • When we give we show that we trust in the God who gave it to us in the first place.

  • When we give we are breaking the stronghold or the love for money.

  • And guess what? God blesses us with more when we show Him that we completely trust Him.

Hebrews 13:5
Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you."

I believe it's an important question to consider and evaluate our lives, "do we love God more than wealth?" When you eliminate the love for money, poverty will pack its bag and leave your house. When you are clear about who your master is in your life, the power of poverty will have no place in your life and family.

How God changed the life of a widow who was planning to commit suicide during a famine?
1 kings 17:12-16
“As surely as the Lord your God lives,” she replied, “I don’t have any bread—only a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat it—and die.”
Elijah said to her, “Don’t be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first, make a small loaf of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son.

For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord sends rain on the land.’”
She went away and did as Elijah had told her. So there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family. For the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry, in keeping with the word of the Lord spoken by Elijah.

This whole situation was unfathomable for the widow. She must have been like, How can I give when I have hardly left for me and my son? Why should I give my last meal to a random stranger? Her Obedience was phenomenal and that made her situation from being broke to having plentiful. The whole land did not have enough food because of the famine. But, when she chose to obey and give from her nothingness to a prophet. Her obedience led her to prosperity.

Enjoy His blessings but your call is beyond that.
Genesis 18:18
Abraham will surely becomea greatand powerful nation, and through him all the nations of the earth will be blessed. For I have chosen him, so that he will command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing what is right and just, in order that the LORD may bring upon Abraham what He has promised.”…

One of the promises that God gave to Abraham was that he will not only be blessed. But he will be a blessing to all the nations of the world. If you believe that you stand on the same blessing that of Abraham, are you being a blessing to the world you are living in? Especially in the present circumstances where we are in, the world needs radical lovers, givers and people with a heart to serve. If we are never able to do that we may be tolerating the power of poverty in our lives.

1 Timothy 6:18 (NIV)
“Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.”
Proverbs 14:31 (NIV)
“He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.”

Hope you were blessed reading this blog. I believe it is the heart of God that we walk in the fulness in all the areas possible.
